I get the question, “Is it okay to do any activities outside the gym?” all the time from clients. I call this active rest; your not at the gym training but you are doing something active like hiking, playing tennis, or biking.
My rule of thumb for this is that you can do anything you want outside your training program. There are some recommendations about how much and how often.
1). Do not do anything strenuous prior to your workout if it’s on the same day. If you want to do it after that is just fine as long as you get proper nourishment.
2). If your working too hard outside the scope of the training program it will show in your training performance. In this case dial it back a bit.
3). Outside activity is never a replacement for training; it will always be in addition to a program.
Feel free to experiment with the limits of your body. Understanding your own ability to recover and train effectively in the gym will differ person to person.
It may take a few weeks of trial and error to figure this out. Also note that a properly constructed training program has everything you will ever need as far as exercise; everything else is icing on the cake.
